George Miller’s highly anticipated followup to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road finds us in the palm of Idris Elba’s hand as he plays a djinn at the disposal of Tilda Swinton, a content academic who stumbles into possession of him. Often centering women and always championing outcasts in his stories, Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing is no exception: what results from all the whizzbang is a bewildering and bewitching tale which isn’t so much the familiar cautionary tale against wishing itself, but more of a reflection on what remains when all our wishes have been granted and we’re left to conjure stories in a world where imagination seems to have lost its power.
