I’m an ingredient reader, not only for food, but for anything I put onto my skin because it’s not just about what goes in our body, but on us too - our skin is our largest organ. Since moving to New Zealand, I’ve had to wear sunscreen a lot more regularly because the sun is soooo much harsher here 🥵, and a hat + protective clothing often isn't enough for my delicate skin. I think we all know that it’s important to be responsible with sun exposure. The safest option is covering up and supporting skin health internally + externally. Something that isn’t as widely known is that many conventional sunscreens may do more harm than good. Many contain harmful chemicals that can penetrate the skin or be inhaled if using a spray sunscreen which can be problematic, not only for our health but to our oceans. One of these harmful chemicals is Oxybenzone. It’s an endocrine disruptor, and has been linked to degraded sperm quality. The EWG warns against using oxybenzone, especially on children or pregnant / breastfeeding women. I know sunscreen ingredients can be really tricky to read, let alone understand.
