It took a while to be ready to push myself again in the gym. It turns out a month at sea with 12 hours of rowing a day, no weight bearing activity, and minimal sleep will do a number on your central nervous system, muscles, connective tissue, and potentially bone density. My first attempt to exercise was four-ish weeks ago. I tried a set of just 10 kettlebell squats and genuinely couldn’t finish them. I felt so weak and hopeless, I cried right there in the gym!
I was reminded of something a coach told me a while ago: don’t come back until you really miss it. So I didn’t. I didn’t work out at all for the past month, aside from a couple of hikes while I was in Italy.
Then a week ago, I felt the itch to start again... and so begins a rebuild 🎉 Meeting myself where I’m at, being patient, and celebrating my wins: like showing up, bumping up in weight from a previous session, and today, going on my first run! It was only 3 miles and I walked part of it, but it felt so so good.
Cheers to honoring rest and recovery, and nourishing the soul with whatever it needs ✨
