What's going on here? The Ommegang or 'walk around' is a huge and detailed 1616 painting that you can see on display in our Europe galleries. What can we spot if we look up close? 1. A liaison in an upper window? 2. A cavalier attitude to health and safety on a moving float, with a mother and infant teetering at the top and a member of the party fast asleep beneath 3. A caged boy dressed as a parrot teaching birds to say "Isabella is queen" and the best outfits in the entire Ommegang. 4. Unaccompanied children riding precariously on top of large pageant cars 5. One of three people of African descent in this painting (highlighted in our Africa Trail, see link in bio), highlighting the African presence in traditional European events like this. 6. Chaos. Just chaos. 7-11. Swipe through the Ommegang Context: The Ommegang was a huge annual procession in Brussels. This painting is 1 of 6 that was commissioned by Isabella and Albert in 1615, rulers of the Southern Netherlands at the time. Painted by Denys Van Alsloot.
