This 1890 photograph shows the view of New York City from the balcony of the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal. Early visitors to the Statue of Liberty did not see skyscrapers and apartment buildings decorating the skyline of Manhattan and Brooklyn, rather they enjoyed a view of the many ships traveling in the Hudson Bay and even the newly constructed Brooklyn Bridge. Until the completion of the New York World Building in 1890, the Statue of Liberty was the tallest structure in New York City.
Before your visit to the Statue of Liberty National Monument, be sure to book your Pedestal Reserve tickets in advance through Statue City Cruises so that you can enjoy this view as well!
