There are hundreds of stories and experiences that have paved my road to homeschooling. This is one of them. 85% of teachers are white women. In an experience that I’ll share in another post, in a Montessori virtual program, a white teacher/ guide helped me to make my final decision about school for my daughter with her actions and ignorance. Not enough of the 85% are doing the work that would make me feel that my daughter’s identity and self worth would be safe in their hands 35-40 hours per week. This is not to say that teachers of color are perfect as a group either. But in the Montessori schools I’d be most interested in my daughter attending, the teaching staff has a pretty consistent “look”.
