The State of #Florida has told public school administrators to ignore guidance from the U.S. Department of #Education, which, under #TitleIX, now prohibits discrimination in schools based on #sexualorientation and #genderidentity.
Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz sent a letter to school administrators suggesting they ignore new federal policies on sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination because they are “sub-regulatory ‘guidance’” and thus “should not be treated as governing law.”
The letter goes on to say that schools who attempt to comply with the guidance and let “biological males who identify as female” into female bathrooms or onto women’s sports teams will “jeopardize the safety and wellbeing of Florida students and risk violating Florida law.”
Title IX was created in the 1970s and prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools and other educational institutions. In June, the USDOE proposed a change to Title IX regulations that, among other changes, will “protect LGBTQIA+ students from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics.”
The move comes as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has continued bashing what he calls “#woke gender ideology” in schools.
