I started working with Zoe @zoe_mcdougall at Snapper just before the Challenger Series began at the beginning of May. The first thing I saw was her fluid style and natural power. I like that she doesn't over surf the wave, a refreshing quality not many young competition surfers have. I immediately saw where I could help improve her timing, making it easier for her to surf more radical.
She started learning Wave Ki, and we talked about how to win and how good it feels to surf well in competition. She got a 17th at Snapper, and I learned more about her. The following week, we communicated via phone, text, and zoom, and she got a 9th at small, junky Manly, not a great result, but considering the weak waves, it was good, and she learned more about me. Then, during this last event at Ballito, she showed her supreme talent and competitive savvy by narrowly losing to Bronte Macaulay for a 5th place finish for her best result in a big event. She has climbed to 10th in the challenger series rankings and heading into the US Open on an upward trend. I am very proud of you, Zoe; your work ethic is paying off, go get um tiger!
The goal for Zoe in the next four months is to continue her progress by consistently practicing Wave Ki so that by the time she gets home to Hawaii in October, her confidence is at an all-time high, and she is within range of qualifying for the CT.
