The idea of slugging has been familiar to dermatologists for a long time as a trick to help dry skin and has been popularized over the past couple of years thanks to social media. It can be a good way to provide extra hydration to your skin. ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿงด Slugging is a practice that uses an occlusive product - generally petrolatum like Vaseline or Aquaphor, though some people may prefer something less occlusive like La Roche Posay Cicaplast - as an extra layer on top of moisturizer or over hydrating serums to help lock in moisture. ๐Ÿ” If you are slugging I recommend avoiding applying an occlusive layer on top of ingredients like hydroxy acids or retinoids, as it may intensify the effects and increase the chances of irritation. Another caution when it comes to slugging is millia. If you know that you tend to develop millia in a particular area (e.g. under the eyes) then I would avoid slugging in those areas. Slugging is also not generally recommended for those with acne. It may still be used on targeted areas of dry skin but best not to use all over the face if you are prone to milia or acne. #drkatiebeleznay #dermatologist #skincaretips #dryskin #slugging #igskincare
