Far’a camp (مخيّم الفارعة), located in the rural northeast of Nablus, is one of the most geographically isolated refugee camps in Palestine, with many services only available in the cities of Jenin and Nablus. Though Far’a camp’s isolation is in many ways detrimental to the residents’ livelihoods, the lack of nearby city centres makes the land surrounding the camp affordable in price, unlike most other camps located next to urban centres. This gives some Far’a camp refugees the opportunity to move outside the camp, as well as to farm the land. Far’a camp therefore has fewer overcrowding issues than other camps, as well as an active civil society with a number of community-based organizations. It is one of the few camps in Palestine that is supplied water by the nearby spring of Far'a, from which the camp receives its name. Today, it is home to nearly 10,000 Palestinian refugees. The camp was established in 1949, after hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees were expelled from their homes during the Nakba and their communities destroyed. Refugee camps across the West Bank and Gaza were hastily prepared and quickly overrun. Thought to be a temporary solution, most of them eventually developed into outright cities, but with poor infrastructure, extreme unemployment, and widespread poverty. With their villages destroyed and their homes taken over, most refugees continued to hold on to hope for a return, but as the years went by and with the situation only deteriorating, these camps are gradually becoming permanent homes for new generations losing touch with their past. — Photo by @ayyoub_ahmad #rightofreturn #palestine
