Climate doomism is a white phenomenon.
As climate doomism continues to circulate online, I can’t help but notice the lack of nuance surrounding nihilistic perspectives.
As I noted in this video, the framing around climate doomism (and a lot of conversations in climate communication for that matter) are framed in a way that does not center the lived experiences of many Black, Indigenous and other people of color... many of whom have been at the frontlines of climate action for decades and know that inaction is not a possibility.
Let me also be clear - This video is not meant to discard anyone who experiences climate doomism. A carceral system is not compatible with a just climate future. In fact, I believe people can overcome climate doomism. I’ve seen it happen with my own two eyes. This video is meant to address climate doomism as a racialized phenomenon that is not relatable to the plight of many frontline communities. I believe that being honest about our climate narratives (by discussing what hits the mark and what doesn’t) is imperative to mobilizing a movement for everyone AND in helping folks overcome climate doomism, by helping to illustrate why they are experiencing it in the first place.
