The Statue of Liberty is instantly recognizable today as a beacon of liberty, but her symbols may have seemed a little foreign to Americans back in 1886.
In a way, this may actually be one of the secrets to her success.
With a statue of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or Christopher Columbus comes a specific meaning and history. We can study the words, actions, and legacy of these figures and come away with an understanding of what each statue represents.
That isn't the case for the Statue of Liberty.
Her name and symbols (torch, crown, tablet, and chains at her feet) can act as broad metaphors, creating a large umbrella for people to fill in their own personal understanding of what the statue represents. She has been adopted time and time again by advocates of liberty in different forms, and she will continue to change as new ideals are attached to her.
What do you think the statue will stand for in the future?
