Back in Ohio, every trip would be a 3-4 hour drive one way to get to some dark location. But this trip was 5 hours of flight time plus 2 hours of driving and I averaged 2-3 hours of sleep every night but it was all worth it. Seeing the core of our galaxy rise in one of the darkest skies I’ve been and the sky come alive with bright stars was a wonderful experience. Bisti wilderness was once a coastal swamp and home to huge trees, reptiles and dinosaurs and this area is a true desert wilderness. It is scattered with petrified rocks, logs and some beautiful rock formations. Bisti from Navajo language translates to shale hills. This particular structure looked like a big rock balanced on shale and sandstone. Facing south, this made a good candidate for a milky way backdrop.
