Today is National Lighthouse Day! 💡⛵️ Standing watch along America's coastlines, lighthouses are shining beacons of light, aiding ships navigating waters close to land. Located in the heart of New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty calls several lighthouses neighbors as she watches ships sail along the harbor's waves, in image order: 1. Robbins Reef Lighthouse: Or Kate's light after intrepid lighthouse keeper Kate Walker, the structure was commissioned in 1837 and overseen by the U.S. Coast Guard from 1939-2009. 2. Staten Island Range Lighthouse: Built in 1912, the tower's lantern can be seen up to 23 miles out by inbound ships sailing from the Atlantic Ocean. 3. Sandy Hook Lighthouse: Over at our neighbor park @gatewaynps, the tower has helped guide ships into New York Harbor since 1764, making it one of the oldest operating lighthouses in the country! 4. Last but not least- Lady Liberty herself! Her iconic torch served as a beacon from 1886 to 1902. After which, the statue's short career as a lighthouse ended. The National Park Service oversees nearly 50 historic lighthouses, including the Statue of Liberty and Sandy Hook Lighthouse!
