In 2018, as a Senior Fellow for @popcollab, I researched + wrote a report on the 100-year history of representing Muslims on TV + film called “Haqq + Hollywood.” From that report, I developed a framework to analyze the power dynamics contributing to a century of reductive storytelling I called the “Triangle of Politics, Pop Culture, + Public Opinion.” In this Frank talk in 2019, I spun it to specify “Hollywood” and explain the origins of and application of this framework. This theorization informs a lot of the work I continue to do in the pop culture storytelling realm.
