Meet the blue-ringed octopus. One of the most venomous marine species on the planet. Thankfully, although the blue-ringed octopus bite contains the powerful neurotoxin tetrodotoxin, the animal is docile and unlikely to bite unless handled. Encounters with this creature are rare but people have been bitten after handling or accidentally stepping on a blue-ringed octopus. In this case the octopus likely felt threatened by me, hence its flashing of the blue rings to scare me away. To it, I’m this big bubble blower chasing it around. To me, this was the coolest thing ever. I couldn’t help but be fascinated by the colours it was displaying and it’s movements across the reef. Rather than scare me away, it drew me in closer 🤩 What intrigued me the most was when it would jump from one patch of coral to another it with extend two of its tentacles to create a sail that would carry it efficiently through the currents. 🤯 All cephalopods are so incredibly adaptive and intelligent. They’ve always been at the top of my list of things I hope to see underwater. If you’re lucky enough to come across one on a dive, you’ll likely be getting quite the show! 📍Lembeh, Indonesia 🇮🇩
