As the year closes, it’s important to reflect on what we have been able to accomplish together. We created space and built power for Native peoples in 2022. One example was at the 100th anniversary of the Santa Fe Indian Market where Native artists, activists, thought leaders, and allies came together to celebrate Indigenous excellence. Hosted in partnership with Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, Urban Native Era, NDN Collective, the Christensen Fund, Eighth Generation, Sundance Institute’s Indigenous Program, and more, we amplified a vision of Indigenous futurism over two days through multimedia art, storytelling, and critical discussions. We highlighted and celebrated the historic advances in Native representation in film and TV with the cast and creators of Prey, Reservation Dogs and Rutherford Falls. We also created space to discuss issues related to climate justice, voting, and the leadership of Native women and 2SLGBTQ+ and non-binary relatives. More than 400 people from across the country attended to celebrate Indigenous joy and to make space where we could inspire action to create a just future. Cara Romero (Chemehuevi) was the featured artist for the event whose work is featured in many public and private collections internationally.
