Happy National Coming Out Day! I officially came out to the world 12 years ago today. I mean, not that it was much of a surprise to anyone, but it’s still a journey and a process and I was proud of myself for doing it. Growing up in a conservative, rural community wasn’t the easiest being authentically me.
Would I be straight if given the chance? Absolutely not. Being gay has enriched my life so much. I love being gay.
I will say that the “coming out” never really stops. I still find myself having to code switch or use very neutral terms in some settings for others’ comfort. I look forward to a future where we won’t have to come out. Where people cane be fully embraced for who they are and who they love, even if it’s different than how you are in your own life.
Coming out isn’t reserved solely for saying you like men or women. I’ve found several people in my life have had different coming out experiences, or have had to have multiple coming out experiences. Coming out as trans, coming out as non-binary, coming out as poly, coming out as gender fluid, coming out as asexual, demisexual, and so on.
Are you out and proud? I love you!
Are you still in the closet and figuring yourself out? I also love you!
Are you out in some circles and not in others? Guess what? You’re doing great! I love you, too!
If coming out is a hard process for you, I’m always happy to lend a listening ear. I know it can feel daunting.
You are valid. You are loved. I am happy you’re here.
Be authentically YOU. It’s the greatest gift you can give yourself.
