If you live in Philly or been to City Hall the chances are you encountered this statue. Ovtavius Valentine Catto was an educator, intellectual, and civil rights activist. He was also a baseball player and organized an interracial game between the Philadelphia Athletics and this all Black team the Philadelphia Pythians. Catto also joined the then all-white Franklin Institute. Catto fought for civil rights including the desegregation of trolley cars and equal voting rights. In fact it was in 1871 when tension were high and fights broke out between Blacks and Whites during the election year.
