⁣🧿 Much like plastic, BIPOC and other marginalized people are “thrown” out of environmental conversations, from our underrepresentation in the workplace to the way mainstream, zero-waste lifestyles often co-opt indigenous practices and out price low-income folks. Even well-meaning plastic solutions like plastic straws bans have raised concerns about ableism in the sustainability community. We must do better. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Here’s the thing: The same throw-away culture that disposes our planet, disposes of people too - especially people of color. If we are to solve the plastic crisis, environmentalists must understand this—there is no such thing as sacrifice zones without sacrificing people. We must reimagine a world that tolerates neither.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ It’s time that we reframe disposability and uplift an inclusive version of justice - that serves ALL beings. As Plastic Free July comes to a close, ask yourself this: what will you do to better support a movement vested in the interests of frontline communities? What will you do to amplify our voices? ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ You can start by following accounts like:⠀⠀ @blackgirlenvironmentalist ⠀⠀ @intersectionalenvironmentalist ⠀ @elsamengistu ⠀⠀ @mikaelaloach ⠀ @queennushie ⠀ @climatediva ⠀⠀ @marissaalba @conservationscholars ⠀ @ayana.harscoet @ashiainbloom @environmentalbae @aalayna.green @ayisha_sid ⠀ @laurenaritchie ⠀ @williamthewalker @ecochicpodcast ⠀ ⠀⠀ Thank you @glamourmag for amplifying my voice! It’s an honor to be a part of the CWOTY family ❤❤❤⠀ (Note that this ain’t the full article! Read it all in the link in my bio) 🧿
