I didn’t have a moment to post about @allure on Tuesday but I have to pay my respects to the magazine that changed the course of my career. “Beauty content” as we know it today would not exist without Allure. In the early years, @lindawellsny and her team proved that beauty wasn’t just fashion’s afterthought or little sister. They zoomed in on the details and took time to learn from experts to report on the complex (and fun!) business of beauty... Dermatologists who were at the forefront of scientific breakthroughs and new cosmetic procedures that are now, 30 years later, almost totally de-stigmatized. Cosmetic chemists who formulated the products that have become an integral part of our rituals to boost our confidence and comfort. Artists and stylists now referred to as “glam squads” who created the truly iconic looks you see #aesthetic IG accounts continuing to repost to this day. These creatives will be the first to tell you they were unknown before the magazine started spotlighting them. Allure’s storytelling connected the dots between beauty and every corner of culture. And in a way, especially through the framework of the Best of Beauty Awards, these editors were the original beauty influencers before that term existed, giving their internationally-recognized stamp of approval on rigorously tested and loved products. It was an honor to play a very small part in ushering the magazine into its digital future under @heymichellelee and it’s so cool to watch it continue to evolve under @jcruel. As a writer, there’s nothing like seeing your name in print, but change is good. The world is a different place than it was then, media has to adapt with both the good and the bad, and who knows what the future holds. That’s actually what excites me most about working in this field. But I am so grateful for that time in my life when my editors gave me a seat at the table, let me interview major celebrities, and even encouraged my curiosity for pastel hair colors. 😂 And to the folks still at these digi pubs, we see you. Thank you for the work you continue to do to educate beauty enthusiasts around the world. I know I’ll still be reading @allure online. 💘
