Diwali is an ancient harvest festival that has attained spiritual significance to the Indian sub-continent. It’s a lunar festival celebrated in India as a spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Hindus celebrate it as lord Rama returning to his kingdom after 14 years in exile & defeating the demon lord Ravana. It also celebrates his wife Sita walking through fire to demonstrate her purity (we prefer to reframe that now as inner strength and valour) Jains celebrate it as the final liberation of their spiritual leader who was a contemporary of Gautama Buddha. It’s also the new year for Hindu’s and Jains. Sikhs celebrate it as the release of their 6th Guru from captivity. Diwali is associated with female energy – the goddess Lakshmi (bringer of light) and Kali (destruction of evil and bringer of change).
