On the night of Nov 7-8, the Sun, Earth, and the Full Beaver Moon lined up to produce a total lunar eclipse ☀🌎🌕🦫🔭 The peak of the total lunar eclipse saw the Moon turn a dusky red colour, hence the name 'Blood Moon,' as it became fully immersed in the umbra, the innermost and darkest part of the Earth's shadow. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, November’s Full Beaver Moon is named for this time of year when beavers begin to take shelter after storing their food for winter. Many First Nations peoples tracked the passage of time throughout a year using a lunar calendar. Similar to how the months of the solar year are named (January, February, etc.), each 28-day cycle of lunar phases was given a name, based on some aspect of nature or their culture. First Nations groups have different names that reference animals preparing for the onset of colder days: Digging (or Scratching) Moon, a Tlingit name, evokes images of animals foraging for fallen nuts and foliage, or digging winter dens. The Dakota and Lakota term Deer Rutting Moon refers to the time when deer seek out mates, while the Algonquin Whitefish Moon describes the spawning time for this fish. The November Full Moon has also been called the Frost Moon by the Cree and Assiniboine peoples and the Freezing Moon by the Anishinaabe, indicating winter weather on the doorstep. If you missed this week's celestial event, mark your calendars: the next total lunar eclipse happens March 14, 2025. 📝: @scott.r.Sutherland / almanac.com 📸#1: @_wanderloots Toronto, Ontario 📸#2: @digigraphs Toronto, Ontario 📸#3: @dainjason, Stillwater Lake, Nova Scotia 📸#4: @weatherandsky Niagara, Ontario 📸#5: @arianecohenn Pierrefonds, Quebec 📸#6: @joshwbaxter Fergus, Ontario 📸#7: @willbpictures Québec, Québec 📸#8: @lensofsolace Calgary, Alberta 📸#9: @frankreardonphotos Iqaluit, Nunavut 📸#10: @andreamariekay Saint John, New Brunswick #ShareYourWeather #totallunareclipse #totallunareclipse2022 #lunareclipse #eclipse #beavermoon #bloodmoon #beaverbloodmoon #fullmoon #moon #moonphotography #nightsky #November #fall #autumn #Canada
