In honor of All the Dangerous Things hitting the shelves four months from today, here’s another sneak peek paragraph to give you a little glimpse into the makings of this book.
Cover design is such a fun part of this whole process, but I had an obnoxiously specific vision for this particular book based on many, many nights spent gazing out at the water in my parent’s backyard. Minotaur was beyond patient with me, as always, as I tried to describe what I had in mind... but then I realized that I actually detailed my vision pretty perfectly in the book itself. Reading these lines again while looking at the cover they ultimately developed is pretty amazing to me, because I really couldn’t imagine anything more perfect. They absolutely nailed it.
“I follow her gaze to the giant oak tree on the edge of our property, its mangled limbs hanging directly over the water and the Spanish moss twisted into its bark like knotted hair... Immediately, I smell the marsh, that prehistoric stink, but it isn’t as strong as it normally is. The water is twinkling in our backyard, deeper than usual, and that’s when I notice a full moon reflecting off the surface like there’s some kind of orb submerged underneath. The intensity of it is masking our yard in an eerie kind of glow—somehow both dark and bright at the exact same time—and I remember that Dad had told me about this once. It’s called a spring tide. When the earth, moon, and sun all find themselves in perfect alignment, something extreme happens.” - page 120
