A giant oceanic manta ray passes through deep blue water after leaving a cleaning station in the Sea of Cortez. Lucky for us, one of those cleaning stations is in our back yard. Giant mantas used to visit these rocky, coral covered seamounts often and in large numbers, passing into the shallows to get rid of dead skin and parasites that are removed by the local reef dwelling fish. Now, we are lucky if we see two individuals in a summer season. For several years they never returned... This summer, conditions have been just right, and we have been fortunate to spend many mornings with these wonderful creatures. I can only hope that more and more mantas continue to return, and that when they do, we realize how fortunate we are to be able to share the water with them. If we are extremely lucky, we will get to witness them dance. Watch til the end...
