✨Ethical climate storytelling @green4ema 2022 Impact Summit✨ This past weekend, I had the honor of attending the 2022 Environmental Media Association’s Impact Summit. As the newly minted Activist Board Chair at EMA, I had the opportunity to moderate a panel (my first time IRL!!) on ‘Ethical climate storytelling’ alongside some of my favorite environmental justice thought leaders (@mayasideas, @queerbrownvegan & @browngirl_green ❤️) As could be expected from such a dynamic group, we dove into dialogue surrounding: the current dynamics (and barriers) in accessing funding in climate storytelling, the role of comedy & sensationalism in climate storytelling, advice for emerging Black, Indigenous, and POC creatives and much, much more. While we all approach climate storytelling in a variety of ways, we emphasized the need for moving beyond the need for the *objective* white savior storyteller (that has for so long been the standard in nature/environmental/climate storytelling) and instead entering into an era where frontline voices and EXPERTISE is platformed and funded AND where collaboration is prioritized over competition. I’m excited for the future that we are building. Speaking truth to power & naming harmful dynamics in the mainstream climate storytelling space to a room of extremely influential folks in the entertainment industry is not an easy task. But the panel did it while maintaining an action-oriented frame that the audience was very receptive to. I’m really honored to have taken part! Big thanks to @debblev for nurturing this community for decades and inviting us all with open arms. You are a QUEEN 💖 Thank you also to @aichaban (happy birthday again!!) & @jasinskijay for guiding me to this community in the first place!! I am so excited to continue growing and learning with the EMA family. Until next time <3
