“Pool of Stone” is an animation that is part of a new collaborative exhibition at Art Basel known as “The Pursuit of Harmony.” All of the pieces within the “Pursuit” take inspiration from the experimental and esoteric teaching of the Bauhaus school of design. “Pool of Stone” draws together a collection of Chinese symbols which evoke luck, femininity, and the continuity of the life cycle— and aligns them with more traditionally masculine, streamlined styles of design like Bauhaus and Dutch modernism. Chinese knots, for example, are decorative woven handicraft ornaments that are used to represent luck, or to mark the passing of a holiday. The knots bring good fortune to the wearer, and crucially are woven from one thread; they look identical from the front and the back and suggest how duality becomes mirrored through continuous reflection. The central motif of “Pool of Stone,” is a Chinese clover knot, a symbol of balance and perpetuity; this knot, known synonymously as “Wishbone” appears throughout the film as a fluid, multifaceted talisman, often being encased or encasing a pool of stone. It acts as the emotional nexus of the piece. In exhibiting traditional Eastern ornamental symbols in harmony with Western design, “Pool of Stone” explores the prismatic nature of change, time, and balance.
