#ovariancysts I’m continuing my ovarian cyst reels! I opened the series with discussing those cysts that have hair, teeth, bone and more! Check it out!🙌🏼 So, yes it is true that most #ovariancysts don’t require removal or #ovariancystectomy. Did you know you produce what we call a follicular cyst every month? During ovulation it ruptures and can cause some pain due to a small release of fluid/blood. So, normal or physiologic cysts include follicular cysts or corpus luteal cysts. And less commonly, pathologic cysts include those such as endometriomas, benign adult teratomas, cystadenomas, and malignant neoplasms. Also most cysts are found on ultrasound and many patients don’t even know they have a cyst since most will resolve spontaneously without intervention. If I took 100 patients and did an ultrasound on them regardless of age, history, or time in their cycle, most would actually have a benign ovarian cyst. Now what makes us determine if the cyst should be removed? I base it on patient’s symptoms, most cysts >6cm (small mandarin orange) should likely be removed due to possible torsion, and if a cyst is complex and not resolving a blood test can be performed to see if it is low or high risk for malignancy. 🔑So the key point is most ovarian cysts don’t require removal and ovarian cysts are normal. It’s a nature thing that happens every month if you aren’t on certain contraceptive methods and it tells you that your body is normal and functioning properly!
