A collection of protest art being shared in the name of 22 year old #mahsaamini who was taken in by the “Morality Police” (not a joke, unfortunately) of #Iran, in whose custody she was killed. Why? Too much of her hair was showing.
The resulting #iranprotests have been met with official violence in which many more have died, mostly young & female.
Now, I’m not qualified to comment on the headscarf, being neither A) Female or B) Muslim. So I’ll partially quote someone who is, Nayeema Raza @nomissima who said this (as cohost of new podcast “On”):
“The headscarf has become extremely politicized and it’s gone both ways. I don’t agree with it in either direction. I don’t think there should be a mandatory requirement to wear a headscarf like there is in Iran. I also don’t like when countries try to ban the headscarf.”
Seems logical.
She goes on to describe the view of a friend in Iran who had participated in the 2009 protests: “Every generation has had a different protest in Iran. In 2009, it was the older Millennials - people who are now 40, and they muted themselves and emigrated from the country. And then in 2017/18...with headscarfs. And then 2019, a huge economic protest that came out - Bloody November - where the Iranian government clamped down, cut off the internet as it has done now. And she (the Iranian friend) was saying this protest is very different because these are Gen Z and very young Millennials. And they’re saying ‘Look, this is OUR country. We’re not a from a destitute country. We’re not going to mute ourselves and emigrate to other places to have economic opportunity, we want it here. And we’re going to reclaim this country.’”
All Iranians are not their regime, just like all Americans are not any given political group, nor are all Israelis their government (swipe for flyer of upcoming Jerusalem event in support of Iranian protesters).
I wish there was more I could do but for now, I can express support for these young women of Iran, who are showing more bravery than most of us could ever dream of.
(Ps There have been replies in some other posts of mine about this, which is fine, but they will be better served here in this thread).
