Julian Francis Abele was a graduate of the Institute of Colored Youth which will later become Cheyney University. He would later become the first Black student admitted to the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and would later become the architecture school’s first black graduate in 1902. Some other notable designs by Abele Include: Duke University’s iconic Chapel Duke’s storied Cameron Indoor Stadium where legendary games were played Despite being the primary designer of Duke University, Abele was refused accommodations at a Durham hotel during a visit to campus. Although it was not until 1988 that a portrait of him was displayed at the University, the main quad at Duke University is now officially named Abel Quad with a dedication plaque prominently placed at the busiest spot on campus Smithsonian Magazine described him, in a career retrospective, as “probably the most accomplished Black architect of his era. #wooderice #blackhistorymonth #philadelphia #philly #phillygram #philadelphia #instaphilly #phillyphilly #whyilovephilly #discoverphl #phillyig #phillyigers #igersphilly #visitphily #igers_philly #philadelphia_ig #philadelphia_citylife #explorephilly #cityofbrotherlylove #jawn #howiseephilly #julianfrancisabele #architecture #rockysteps #artmuseum #didyouknow
