Cultural and technical backgrounds to the design of structures.
Jürg Conzett, a citizen of Schiers (Switzerland), born in 1956 studied civil engineering at EPF Lausanne and ETH Zürich. After receiving his diploma in 1980 he worked for several years in the office of architect Peter Zumthor. In 1988, he started his own office as a structural engineer. Today, the firm Conzett Bronzini Partner in Chur (Grisons) investigates existing constructions and designs new bridges and buildings, often in collaboration with architects. #jürgconzett
Following Edward Allen’s work, I am very interested in the theoretical influence on forming structures - which in a general sense can be looked at as an abstract way of conceiving solutions. On the other hand, we always work in a populated area, which in Switzerland is shaped by century-old building techniques. These traditions are interesting to study and we try to deal with it in an undogmatic and sometimes non-conventional way – for technical as well as for architectural reasons. In the works of our office, we try hard to synthesize these seemingly contradictional requirements.
