It’s been a decade. They say it takes ten years to be a “real” New Yorker. In August of 2010 I moved to New York City, and man does it look different today. From this era I could only find a couple photos that actually included myself. Yes, I see the irony. In 2010 the US was just beginning to barely recover from the crash of ‘08. I just finished my bachelors degree with heaps of debt that I had no idea the magnitude of. None of that mattered to me yet. I didn’t even know how to create an invoice to bill a client (if I was lucky enough to find one). I was entering an industry so fickle and and just reaching its arch from analog to digital as an industry standard. Learning from analog pros made me obsess over the craft of photography and maintaining its integrity. The principles remain the same, except now it’s zeros and ones instead of grains of light sensitive material on film. That’s a whole other thing though. The point is, it’s not just about content for creators that are invested in craft. It’s about process, light manipulation, layers, depth, and approach. I’m grateful to be a professional photographer, and that I have clients that value the craft that I’ve chosen as a career. This is a big thank you to all the mentors, teachers, friends, brands, fellow artists, former roommates, business owners, clients, and of course bartenders that have crossed my path in the past ten years and even before that to get me here. Cheers to all of YOU! As weird as New York is today, I’m proud to say I’m a “real” New Yorker now. Forggedaboutit 🗽❤️
