Story time....... In 2016 after cutting my gap year New Zealand trip short by 3 weeks I found myself back home on Maui trying to figure out what to do. I heard that Pe’ahi (Jaws) was going to have a big swell coming in, but I had never really photographed surfers before and wasn’t sure what to expect. After the first hour shooting from the cliff I was hooked. Seeing fellow humans ride waves that were 30’, 40’, 50’, and bigger gave me an adrenaline rush I had never experienced before and strengthened my love for photography. From before sunrise to sunset I would sit on the cliff with my camera and shoot every rider that dared to go. It was an amazing site to see, but I always saw the photographs that came from the boats and hoped that one day I would get to be down there, on a boat. Today was that day! Although these were “practice waves” and smaller than some days, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to make this dream to true. Mahalo to the Baxter family for taking us out.
