Artist Conrad Shawcross discusses the “irrational heart” beating within his bewitching outdoor installation Dark Heart: “There’s a dark romance about these two things which kiss for a second... in a eternal dance where they are repelling and attracting each other...” #WinterLight 📅 Until 31 January 2023 - More info link in bio 🗺️ You can download our guided map (link in bio) to all our free, open-air exhibitions so you can visit all of them in one awe-inspiring walk —— A meditative work, Dark Heart is comprised of a pair of schematical, articulated arms that relentlessly and rhythmically rotate, while pulsing in and out. The piece, originally in place over a lake, plays on both literary and scientific references. In the first instance there are echoes of the hubristic search for the whale in Moby Dick and for the Heart of Darkness in Joseph Conrad’s novel of the same name, pulling their protagonists into a deadly spiral of obsession. Scientifically, the work takes angular momentum as its inspiration, the conservation of which gives objects in space their intense rotation. Through this force in our own solar system, as in other universes and black holes, the planets tend towards a flat spiralling plane as they evolve and change over time. —— Conrad Shawcross’ Dark Heart is part of Southbank Centre’s free #WinterLight exhibition - which has been extended to run until 31 January 2023 Featuring 11 low-energy LED light works from 10 internationally acclaimed contemporary artists, the Winter Light installations utilise light, colour and mixed media to playfully explore topics at the forefront of society, such as individual and collective identity, the environment and technology. #ConradShawcross #DarkHeart #Sculpture #Installation #OutdoorInstallation #Art #FreeArt #Light #LightSculpture #London #ThingsToDoInLondon #Southbank #SouthbankCentre
