Sneakerella has been out for a few weeks now so i wanted to look back on some of the process work involved with making shoes fit for a movie. we made 5 major models overall but i want to start with this one, the new generation glass slipper, or what the production team called El's Gala sneaker.
i was originally tasked with making a shoe that had a lot of plot points incorporated into it. if it looks like a lot is going on that's because it is for a good reason lol. I've made a lot of these individual details before but usually on their own and never combined together in such a complex way.
@rachaelgrubbs and @nifferdesign designed the shoe so that the upper was made from a bunch of non shoe related objects that the 2 main characters find over the course of going on a date. this means getting the pieces to stay together, let alone shaped around the last (foot form), needed a lot of patience and time to figure out. but because time was tight, my mentor @solesurvivorshop, project manager @certified.organic and i had to figure out the upper details on the fly. the prototypes are actually what got sent in and worn by the actors. so frickin cool to see that our experimental shoes worked and looked good on screen.
next was the sole, a whole other project completely. my good friend daniel @satchimoe (who i've known since elementary school!!) had to make wearable sole units that somehow had a tiny new york city along with a working electronic setting sun inside. and they had to be clear rubber so you can see everything (the clearer the material the more bonkers difficult it becomes to work with) imagine the light up shoes we had as kids but on magical steroids. one of my favourite breakthrough moments during the whole shoe production was when @satchimore figured out that to make the sunset work he used a fibre optic cable, wrapped in electrical tape so there was a concentrated circle with no light leak happening in the rest of the sole. someone originally told us to use an LED but because the sole material is clear it would've lit everything up and you wouldn't see NYC in there. literally a damn daniel moment.
much more to show on the next 4 models eventually🌞
