Ahh yes, the Icelandic seasons! 🌬🌦☀️🌨🥶 Winter, spring, summer and fall... it's not that straightforward here. As the sun rises higher up in the sky and we notice that the "sunrise is much earlier today than it was a few days ago", or "hey, it's seven in the evening, and it is STILL bright outside", we start to get the so-called "vorfílingur", or the Spring Feeling. It's an optimistic feeling you need to push through the last winter weeks and it tells you that there really is a summer at the end of it all. This winter has been one of the heaviest since weather measurements began, and the extreme storms are getting even more drastic. At some point, we all just accepted that this winter would never end. But in all this anticipation and optimism with this Spring Feeling, there is a phenomenon you can't ignore, called "gluggaveður", or Window Wether... it gets us every time. You see, even though we Icelanders want the current season to be classified as spring, we have to constantly remind ourselves that it is still winter and that spring doesn't really exist here. This so-called gluggaveður or Window Weather is exactly what the words describe. The thing is, the weather looks nice when you are inside staring out the window. You wake up with the sun and a clear sky, and the birds are singing. You feel optimistic that the spring has finally arrived and that it's time to put on a light coat and some pastel spring clothing. But no, don't let that sun fool you because outside is an ice-cold breeze coming straight from the North Pole with temperatures far below zero, ready to bite any exposed bare skin. So you go back inside and put on that down parka and your wool hat again because winter is far from being over, dear! 😎❄️ ©Copyright - geology_with_helga
