I drew this album cover for the collaborative project by @larryjunetfm and @jayworthy142 , ‘2 P'z In A Pod.’ It's the illustrated *alternate* version. But that's the end of the story. Let me start at the beginning. Growing up I wanted to draw comics professionally. Besides listening to rap, it's all I did as a teenager. Drawing is actually how I got my foot in the door at ego trip—get JIGGY with it! But thanks to the natural traction I gained for my music writing, by the time I started college illustration had taken a backseat. 20 years of magazine-and-website making later, in 2017, @bahr_none would bring Jay Worthy by my office at Complex. There was no real agenda to the meeting, but Bahr knows my taste and figured I'd dig Worthy's unique post-modern West Coast bounce. And I did. And Worthy was a cool dude on top of it. Over the years we stayed in touch via IG. I've thought Worthy had some of the best album art in the game and was not shy about giving him his flowers when a release caught my attention. Much to my surprise Worthy had been peeping the Quarantine drawings I had been posting and said he was gonna need a cover from me for the right project. Flattered, I said "of course," and figured nothing would come from it. But a year later he hit me saying he and Larry June had a collaborative project and he wanted an illustrated album cover. He sent me a few songs and told me to follow the funk. So I dove in with two feet and tried to bring the album's Bay Area bop and v 🅿️ lyrical content to life. I'd like to think I landed somewhere between the Doggystyle cover and Richard Scarry. Which, upon reflection, is maybe where more of my work than I'd like to admit lives, lol? Either way, I'm really psyched to knock this off the bucket list, and I can't wait to see it on a t-shirt or a poster. And eventually—supply chain willing—on a piece of vinyl. I highly recommend giving '2 P'z' a spin or 5. Worthy and Larry deliver a quintessential funky ride in the tradition of so many ‘90s classics, but they juxtapose the smooth sounds with undeniably modern raps that would sound at home on a Griselda release. Thank you Worthy! This is a literal dream come true. 🙏🏻
