As the nation honors Martin Luther King, his legacy reflects across the decades since King delivered his CCNY Commencement address, with echoes heard in the historic "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial 11 weeks later.
Sixty years ago this June 12, within hours of the assassination of fellow civil rights leader Medgar Evers, King vowed to graduates, "I never intend to adjust myself to segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to the madness of militarism and the self-defeating effects of physical violence."
