Roger Federer has announced his retirement from professional tennis. The Swiss great, 41, will play his final official event at the Laver Cup in London next week before stepping away from the tour. After suggestions in recent weeks that Federer’s attempts to come back from knee surgery were not proceeding as hoped, he confirmed on social media that he will no longer play grand-slams and ATP tournaments. Instead he will make sporadic appearances in exhibition matches. Federer retires with 20 grand-slam titles to his name, ranking him third in the all-time list of men’s singles champions behind Rafael Nadal (22) and Novak Djokovic (21). He won a total of 103 ATP tournaments, spent 310 weeks as world No 1, claimed an Olympic gold medal with Stan Wawrinka in the men’s doubles at Beijing 2008 and won the Davis Cup with Switzerland in 2014. 📸 Getty Images. 🔗 Click the link in our bio to read the full story.
