The government is being praised by those on the right as the most diverse cabinet ever, and whilst this is technically true - I don't feel much optimism for positive change to tackle inequality in our country. Diversity is so important, not for tick boxing, but to ensure that those impacted by inequality have a voice representing them in voting and policies. I didn't see any of the cabinet ministers speaking out against racial inequality, for LGBTQ rights, or for women's rights. As a woman and as a mum, I care deeply about our rights being fought for and being listened to. Whilst childcare isn't just a female issue, we know that it effects women more with over 54,000 women having to leave their jobs every year due to the lack of flexible working and the astronomical cost of childcare. I'd like to also highlight the brilliant campaigning of both @pregnantthenscrewed and @motherpukka. 🙏 We have Jacob Rees Mogg as our Business Minister - a man who brags about never having changed a nappy, who thinks Flexi working is laziness despite 72% of businesses reporting increased productivity as a direct result of flexible working. We have Theresa Coffey as health minister despite her voting against abortion rights at every opportunity. By the way, we can criticize her for her abysmal voting record, but we don't need to criticize her for her weight and appearance. It's misogny and I'm bored of people focusing on the appearance of women in politics - let's judge them for their actions and not their appearance. Both Matt Hancock and Sajid Javid talked about their love of smoking and noone questioned their ability. Then we have Suella Braverman - someone who wants to take us out of the European Court of Human Rights under the guise of immigration. This protects so many of our human rights - including positive obligations to take allegations of domestic violence or sexual assault seriously. We only have to look at the Sleaze Scandal within our parliament to see how seriously it's taken. Finally, why is there no longer a Minister for Women? I'm terrified. Anyway, just some brief thoughts on @gbnews last night - when I could get a word in. 🤪 What are your thoughts?
