GOT MY FIRST PLAQUE TODAY!! Story time: So back in 2018 I had the chance to remix New Light, and no part of me thought it would ever get released. Tbh, the main reason I did it was just to get a chance to go through all the individual parts of the session. As a producer, nothing is more fun than poking around in someone else’s project file and hearing all their production details. 50+ tracks of raw John Mayer guitar takes? SIGN ME UP, BROTHER. Anyway... had a fun couple days working on the remix, and I remember thinking “I want to make the nighttime version of New Light”. I focused on flipping the chords into something a bit darker, used some fun, nerdy chord inversions, and hoped that if John ever heard it, he’d at least appreciate that some real thought went into it. There were so many cool parts in the session that I was able to repurpose a bunch of them to use in my version. So this was really closer to a “remix” in the classic sense. I even managed to sneak a vocoder in on the bridge 😇. Anyway, I sent it off and didn’t hear anything for a couple months. Then one day, I randomly get a call from my manager, telling me it actually *was* going to be released, and I have 24 hours to clean it up and send it for mastering. Dropped everything, finished it up, and off it went. I still get a lot of messages from people about the track, and it’s still so cool for me to see it up at the top of my Spotify page. So this plaque is awesome. Does this feel like cheating? A little bit. Is it a lot easier to get one of these when you’re piggybacking off the success of a massive song by a massive artist? Undoubtedly. But it’s fine, I’m gonna enjoy this. Catch me on zoom calls with this thing *just barely* peeking out from the side of the frame.
