Happy 2 year heartiversary to my little warrior. I may have a horrible memory, but I will never forget this day in my entire life. Quite easily one of the scariest of my life, was the day Russell underwent open heart surgery at 2.5 months old. As if this kid didn’t have it hard enough already being born 9 weeks early, he was diagnosed with a rather large hole in his heart called a VSD. It made things like eating and breathing hard on his little 3 pound body and burned too many calories, so we kept him growing in the NICU as long as we could until he was big enough for surgery. The goal was to make it to 10lbs, but at 7.2 his other organs started to become compromised and he was transferred to CHLA for his surgery the next day. I remember searching desperately for hope, looking up every hashtag and account i could find on Instagram to little avail. I wanted to see stories of hope, I wanted to know that although we had spent his entire life in the hospital thus far, we would make it home and be on the other side of this nightmare. I promised myself I would always share his story so that anyone else looking for hope could maybe find some solace in something as simple as a post on Instagram.
