Ancient Entanglements From abstract to figurative, Ancient Entanglements features a range of collaborative works which started over conversations at the American Academy in Rome in 2017-18. One piece that was created at that time serves as a touchstone for the exhibition. Janus is a colossal concrete sculpture, teetering on a single point, tethered to the ground as a gravity laden object. The show also features new works by Clifford and Lobdell titled Orion, one of the most recognizable constellations in the nights sky. Orion suspends naturally dyed fiber rope that supports custom carved maple figures. The conjoining of rope and wood complete the legibility of knot figures, levitating in the space. Datum continues this conversational play by flipping the relationship in Orion and establishing a horizontal relationship with water. These concepts extend into the collaboration with Biggers where classical figures are distorted, deflated, impressed, and merged with figures from different times and places. Ancient Entanglements is a meditation on our contemporary relationship with our ancient past. @wassermanprojects presents a solo exhibition by associate professor @thebrandonclifford @jo_lob_dell of Matter Design, featuring collaborative works with MLK Scholar @sanfordbiggers . The project team includes current MIT graduate students @carolineamstutz, @sloanaulgur, @zaschu and recent alumni @taylorlboes and @gil_sunshine Ancient Entanglements is on view until December 17.
