FINAL WEEK | David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020 closes this week at The Sakıp Sabancı Museum in Istanbul. The exhibition marks the artist's first presentation in Turkey, a historical moment for Hockney and the international art community. “I wanted David Hockney, who is an important and multi-talented artist, to be better known in Türkiye and wanted the joy and passion of spring to come to Türkiye, with an exhibition that gives off such a positive energy,” explained Nazan Olcer, museum director of The Sakıp Sabancı Museum, in an interview with Turkish news channel TRT World. Hockney became closely acquainted with touch-screen technology in the 2010s as iPads and other digital products gained mass popularity. Documenting his observations of the passing seasons in Normandy during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020, Hockney’s 112 iPad drawings depict the slow transition from the winter dusted fruit trees outside his window to the bursting florals of a fertile, abundant spring. Using strikingly saturated colors, Hockney's digital compositions showcase the unfurling flowers, flower beds, ponds, rivers, fields, and distant hills of a springtime in Normandy. David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020, closes July 29 at The Sakıp Sabancı Museum, commencing its tour of Europe which included previous runs at the Royal Academy in London, and Bozar in Brussels. The exhibition will travel to The Art Institute of Chicago where it will be on view from August 20, 2022 – Jan 9, 2023. Pictured: 1.
