Pilots needed to be specially certified to fly into Kai Tak Airport. Here's one big reason: when they saw Checkerboard Hill as they approached the airport, they needed to make a 47 degree visual right turn to line up with the runway, which was just two nautical miles away. At this point, the plane would be only 650 feet above the ground, about the same height as many of today's Hong Kong apartment buildings! Photo by @carsonshutters Tag your photos with #zolimahongkong and you'll have a chance of being featured!
