This year marks the 160th anniversary of the largest mass execution in US history. Today, we remember and honor the 40 Dakota men who were hanged under the order of President Lincoln. U.S. schools teach that President Lincoln was an exemplary role model and leader for our country and sweep this horrific event under the rug. But Native peoples have a different perspective and we never forget. We are left wondering why the largest execution is often left out of history books, yet we fear we know the answer. Honoring Lincoln's nearly “perfect” presidency and America’s false narrative, “land of the free,” is more important than giving justice to the innocent Dakota peoples who lost their lives. While we cannot change the past, it is important we acknowledge the truth and teach an accurate version of history.
