You don’t necessarily need fancy gadgets to measure the temperature of liquid lava.
An excellent trick to roughly estimate the temperature of lavas flowing on the surface is to look at the colour:
🤍White lava: ~1300°C (2370°F),
💛Yellow lava: ~1100-1200°C (2010-2190°F),
🧡Orange lava: ~950-1000°C (1740-1830°F),
❤️Red lava: ~800-900°C (1470-1650°F),
♥️Dark red lava: 680-770°C (1255-1420 °F),
🤎Brownish red lava: 550-630°C (1020-1170 °F),
🖤Black and grey lava: below 550°C and transitioning to a solid form.
As the lava has hardened, it can still be very warm, so be careful around fresh lava, whether liquid or solid!
Based on this video from the most recent eruption in Iceland, on August 3rd 2022, what would you estimate the temperature of the lava to be?
Also, compare it to my videos from last years eruption... is it warmer or cooler? 😎🌋
