Trunk Flexion Exercise Progression ‼️
There are so many core exercise variations out there that it can feel almost impossible to create a clean, logical progression. These are just a few options I like to use as a PT and in my own training. There are way more exercise options than what’s shown in this video!!
What matters most is having a general outline in your head so you’re not just throwing random core exercises into a program.
Here’s the simple framework I lean on:
1️⃣ Yielding isometrics
Planks, knee planks, dead bugs, etc.
2️⃣ Overcoming isometrics
I love these as early strengthening because they’re usually tolerated well, and they can scale from beginner → very advanced depending on how hard you push.
3️⃣ Dynamic exercises
Tons of choices here: ab wheel, pikes, crunch variations, sit-ups, leg raises, cable crunches—you name it.
4️⃣ Advanced dynamic work
Hanging leg raises, dragon flags, heavy cable crunches, GHD sit ups, standing ab wheel rollouts… endless options.
5️⃣ And always—add load to progress any of the above.
Core programming is honestly fun because of how many variations exist… but having a simple progression makes things way less overwhelming for patients (and for myself).
Curious how you all progress trunk flexion exercises 👀 what do you like to use? ⬇️
