Many of you have noticed that we took some time off in July to run a series of pop ups hosted by some incredibly talented and wonderful people, all of whom we are pleased to say are welcome back anytime.
We did this for more reasons than we may have led on.
We’ve spent years saying someone will come along. Who doesn’t want a beachside restaurant and their own fishing fleet? We had a couple close calls but it never really panned out, and given my life’s experience with this sort of thing, forcing it simply wasn’t an option. On our frequent Baja runs we would dream of grabbing one of these amazingly talented young seafood-centric chefs to try the Venice life.
If you’ve been following our travels on Instagram, you know by now there is one particular spot (amongst a plethora) we love to frequent, and some times even take over.
La Bete Noire is a very special place owned by our very gifted friend Diego Hernandez. Not only is Bete Noire an incredible HiFi bar, Diego is an incredible chef. If the name Corazon de Tierra rings a bell....welp, that was his for 11 years. No stranger to LA, he also garnishes one hell of a J Gold review from his time at Verlaine.
Diego and I reconnected recently over talks of attempting to acquire one of our favorite bars in Ensenada. I had way too much coffee and couldn’t help myself from having that moment where you think “Why have we been looking for a chef like Diego...why not just fuckin Diego himself.”
I quickly seized the opportunity at the bite window, which I have learned from tuna fishing could be very short. After a quick elevator pitch and talks of boats and fishing tales, one trip to see the operation, and a final test run of the team via a takeover at Bete Noire, IT WAS ON.
