Black Skin Doesn’t Need Sun Protection!!️⁣ ⁣ Higher melanin content in darker skin affords higher baseline protection against sun’s UVR but it’s not all protective. Darker skin tones still get the following UVR induced damage: ⁣ Premature aging in the form of dyspigmentation(melasma and other forms of discoloration etc), eventually fine lines and wrinkles, sunburns, and potentially skin cancers. ⁣ ⁣ Back Skin Can’t Get Skin Cancer !!️⁣ Darker skin has a lower risk of skin cancer not, NO risk of skin cancer. It is still possible to get skin cancer in sun-exposed areas of the body, although a majority of skin cancers in darker skin tend to occur in non sun-exposed areas. Darker skin folks should get an annual derm skin exam to check for concerning lesions like everybody else. Keep in mind, skin cancer in darker skin is often more aggressive, advanced at time diagnoses and associated with a higher mortality rate.⁣ ⁣ Black Skin Can’t Get Sunburns !!️- Darker is not immune to sunburns, it just takes longer sun exposure and intensity to get a visibly sunburnt. This is because the higher melanin content in skin offers higher baseline sun protection but it’s is not all protective. Even when you don’t have visible signs of the sunburn, remember DNA damage is still occurring in skin. Sunburns do not typically present with striking changes in skin color such as redness in dark skin but itching, intense pain, peeling and eventually hyperpigmentation can occur.
